Overview and Objective

For this project, I redesigned "Steal This Album" by System of a Down, one of my favorite bands. Compared to their other album covers, which carry a strong, distinctive visual identity, the original cover for this release felt visually weak and forgettable. My goal was to give it a stronger presence while still respecting the band's original intent: a minimal, mostly typographic cover with little to no imagery.

Brand Identity Research

System of a Down's album covers consistently use bold, high contrast imagery and hand drawn or illustrative elements, paired with a distinctive stretched, all caps logo treatment. Studying this identity helped define what "feeling like a System of a Down cover" actually means, so the redesign could stay true to their visual language while still standing apart as its own cover.
